Two discursive profiles in contrast: the case of poiché and dal momento che in synchrony and diachrony
Abstract
The present study intends to draw the semantic-discursive profile of two connectors classified as causal, comparing the functioning of poichè and dal momento che in discourse. In the first part of the analysis, which is based on political (corpus Europarl) and journalistic (the Corriere della Sera) prose, the characteristics and peculiarities of both connectors in synchrony are brought into focus. In the second part, the diachronic perspective is examined, investigating the contribution of poichè and dal momento che to the discourse constitution in texts of the literary tradition. The analysis highlights that poiché is established from the very beginning of Italian literature as an argumentative connector with a broad semantic-discursive scope, whereas dal momento che is limited to the creation of local coherence. The analysis takes place within the framework of a linguistic theory of argumentation.
