Abstract

Study of a folk tale that was published in Italian (by Giovan Francesco Straparola) and translated into Spanish (by Francisco Truchado) in the 16th century. Its folkloric motifs are analysed, as well as the relations between oral and written discourse and popular culture and high cultures, as manifested in it, with its projections in the fields of ethics, gender and politics. The allusions to traditional ballads (Las quejas de Urraca, Celinos) that Truchado inserted in the Spanish adaptation are also noted.
