Abstract

According to Virgil, near the entrance of the Underworld stands a shady and silent tree, upon whose branches false dreams nest (somnia uana; Aen.6.282-84). The image of this ancient elm laden with dreams has fascinated critics for centuries, but little has been elucidated about its origin and meaning. The purpose of this article is to review the available material on the subject and to try to address some of the questions that this mysterious image raises.
