Abstract

With this work, I am intending to analyse some inexact quotations in Latin that appear in Jorge Luis Borges´ books. I want to make evident that the inexact use of these quotations is intentioned and related to a dynamic vision of the literature. I also try to explain the reasons that are behind these inexact quotations: first, there is a practical reason, because these quotations come directly from the memory; after that, we have a historical reason, because precedent writers (for example, Poe or Arthur Machen) quote in an inexact way too; finally, we can find a poetical reason, because these quotations show the creativeness of the writer. Specifically, four quotations are analysed, that belong to Virgil, Juvenalis, Tacitus and Augustine.
