Abstract

This paper presents an interpretation of the primitive semantic content of the Latin verb petere, completely unrelated to the meaning of its Indoeuropean root (*pet-: ‘to fly’). The objective of this analysis is to understand the possible causes of the diversification of the meanings of this lexeme. In order to do this, I propose the semantic evolution of this Indoeuropean root into the Latin language in terms of the structural metaphor AIMING FOR A GOAL IS FLYING.
