Feminine virtus and Roman identity in the simile of Aeneid 8.407-415
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to propose an interpretation of the simile of Aeneid 8.407-415 from the perspective of the scholarship on Roman identity in the Aeneid. The characterization of its female protagonist participates, from our viewpoint, in the configuration of Romanness as presented in the poem. In this sense, it is argued that an alternative reading to the ironic or comic traditional interpretation is possible.
