The last Trojan: a new Aeneas
Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the comic book entitled The last Trojan, by V. Mangin and Th. Démarez as an example of the reception of Greek and Roman mythology in this medium. Based on Vergil´s Aeneid and Homer´s Odyssey, its authors offer in it a retelling of the Aeneas´ myth and the origins of Rome in a science-fiction atmosphere for a current audience. The analysis is centered on the variations of the myth that Mangin proposes and the consequences that this entails. The result is a choral myth starring Aeneas, Ulysses, Andromache, and Anchises, without forgetting Creusa and Dido. There is no lack of gods and goddesses in the myth. From Mangin´s hands emerges a new Aeneas, whose pietas has been diminished by different reasons, but who is a more sensitive man. This new retelling of the myth deals with current problems such as drogues, social gender, or the role of women.
