The classical myth in Antonio de Zamora’s Vengar con el fuego el fuego
Abstract
Regarding Classical Tradition, the myth of Meleager, prince of Calydon, already told by Homer (Il.9.434-605), has been scarcely recreated in Spanish Literature. This paper sheds light on one of the few Baroque dramas conveying the myth in a monographic way, Antonio de Zamora’s Vengar con el fuego el fuego. After a comprehensive analysis of the classical sources of the myth in its two main variants (epic and tragic), we explore the myth’s revival in Zamora’s mythological zarzuela, exposing what he owes to classical sources and how far he moves away from them, on account of the historical circumstances of its creation.
