Abstract

The study of the presence of Lucan’s Pharsalia in Alonso de Ercilla’s Araucana and in two epics on the conquest of Mexico—Gabriel Lobo Lasso de la Vega’s Primera parte de Cortés valeroso y Mexicana and Antonio de Saavedra Guzmán’s El peregrino indiano—shows the ways in which Lucan was usually cited or imitated in 16th-century Spain without any concern for his antiimperial ideology.
