The disjuncts in event nominalisation constructions in latin
Abstract
In Latin, the verbal nouns that refer to the activity or state described by their base verbs can give rise to event nominalisation constructions. These constructions are not only capable of reflecting both arguments and adjuncts of their respective underlying verbal predications (§ 1), but also document elements that provide relevant information for the act of communication itself and can be therefore identified as disjuncts or meta-communicative expressions (§ 2). In this vein, the purpose of this article is twofold. On the one hand, it seeks to describe what kind of semantic contents are expressed by the disjuncts within the nominalised constructions (§ 3). On the other, it questions whether these elements suffer restrictions in their transformation from verbal predications to nominal structures and, as the case may be, it aims to offer an explanation of these limitations (§ 4).
