The Prologue of Gómez, monk of Albelda
Abstract
Gómez, monk of the monastery San Martin de Albelda in la Rioja, copied in 950 the treatise De uirginitate sanctae Mariae (written by Ildefonso bishop of Toledo, VII century) at the request of Gotiscalco, bishop of the Aquitan’s See in Le Puy-en-Velay and guest at that moment in the monastery in a stage of his pilgrimage to Santiago. The codex, where we can find the text copied by Gomez, is preserved nowadays with the catalogue number Paris BN lat. 2855. Gómez begins by giving a brief account of Gotiscalco’s commission as well as other news and interesting details in a cultivated and polished Latin: it is the Gómez’s Prologue, work non usual in the medieval manuscripts. In this article we present you the introduction, the critic edition and the translation of Gómez’s story.
