Agostino Valier’s "Rethorica Ecclesiastica" (1574-1583) and Cardinal Charles Borromeo

Abstract
It is quite usual to find references to a group of Neo-Latin treatises on preaching called ‘borromean rhetorics’, the name taken from a couple of widely known studies by Marc Fumaroli.After a short stateof- the-art introduction, this article describes Agostino Valier’s Rhetorica in comparison to Charles Borromeus’ Instructiones prædicatoris verbi Dei.As a conclusion, the author finds that the most traceable influence on Valier is the original order to have the treatise written and published, something that Valier himself accomplishes somehow reluctantly. The definition of a ‘borromean’ group should therefore be questioned from now on.Downloads
