«Las figuras cubiertas de secretas aventuras»: ekphrasis and prophecy in Duarte Dias's La conquista de Granada (1590)
Abstract
The subject of this essay is La conquista que hicieron los poderosos y católicos reyes don Fernando y doña Isabel en el Reino de Granada, a little-known epic composed in Castilian by the Portuguese poet Duarte Dias and published in Madrid in 1590. This work focuses particularly on their prophecy scenes. In the first one, the nimph Medina prophesies to the Duke of Medina Sidonia the Christian victory over Málaga. In the second one, the nimph Duricina explains to king Fernando the figures in the Sala de España, wich represent the future heroes of Spain. The aim is to examine the convergence in this scenes of classical poetic models, especially that of the Aeneid, and contemporary ones, among which Carlo Famoso by Luis Zapata stands out. The conclusion is that the confluence of these models goes beyond mere stylistic or decorative perspective and that it constitutes a key element in the construction of the ideological message.
