Edition and commentary of a new inscription dated in the 9th century (San Xoán de Anzo, Lalín, Pontevedra)
Abstract
A funerary grave-slab with two engraved lines was found by chance in 2019 in a farmhouse in the parish of San Xoán de Anzo (Lalín, Pontevedra). The epigraph, despite having been referred to in an article in the local press and in some academic work, has remained until now without complete interpretation. In this paper we aim to propose a first edition of the text, as well as an analysis that places the epigraph in the historical and epigraphic context of northwestern Spain at the end of the 9th century, the period to which it belongs. The systematic comparison with the collection of inscriptions from the first three centuries of the kingdom of Asturias, with special attention to its text, places us in the presence of an epigraphic act of a certain level that fits in with that which could have been promoted by a personage belonging to the local elite.
