Free people versus controlled people. Machiavelli’s break with Cicero’s legacy.

Keywords: Cicero, Machiavelli, people, Natural law, tumult

Abstract

Decades ago, the interpretation of Machiavelli as a master of evil began to lose validity as republican readings were privileged. Some of these tried to turn Machiavelli into a follower of Cicero's thought. However, despite a certain convergence of their thought in relation to the way in which he defends the republic, the differences are evident in relation to the way in which they understand rhetoric and ethics. Beyond these latter divergences, a new school of Machiavellians claims the radicality and specificity of the Florentine's thought in relation to his way of conceiving the role of the people in the republic.
