Tractatus Logico Philosophicus and Analysis Situs: family resemblances
Abstract
This paper explores affinities between Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico Philosophicus and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's Analysis situs. It is shown that the characterizations of objects in the Tractatus and of points in the Analysis situs follow similar patterns. It also explores the similarities and differences between pretending that “propositions can represent the whole reality” (TLP, § 4.12) or “all [propositions] are connected into an infinitely fine network, to the great mirror” (TLP, § 5.511) and the fact that “each simple substance [has] relations that express all others, and [therefore] is a living and perpetual mirror of the universe” (Monadology, § 56).
