The importance of books in the inquisitorial process against Gaspar de Grajal

Keywords: Gaspar de Grajal, Inquisition, library, Renaissance humanism, Spanish philosophy

Abstract

The following work consists of an analysis of Gaspar de Grajal’s library (1530-1575), professor of Bible at the University of Salamanca and friend of Fray Luis de León. The reason for this research lies not only in the importance that these books had in the author's thought, but also in the development of the inquisitorial process against the Salamanca Hebraists, a lawsuit in which he was accused -among other things- of being a "friend of novelties". As a consequence, in the following pages we will try to reconstruct his personal library with the aim of getting to know the texts he possessed and, in this way, to delve into his doctrine, understanding the influence of the readings he made in the denunciations that led him to die in prison. In order to carry out this task, we will rely mainly on the author's complete works, edited and translated by Crescencio Miguélez Baños.
