Abstract

Philip IV restored the governorate of the Alhambra to the House of Mondéjar in 1624 after a brief period of time in which it was in the hands of the Duke of Uceda. The alcaidía was restored at the head of Íñigo López de Mendoza, 5th Marquis of Mondéjar, who lived continuously in the Alhambra ever since, accompanied by some relatives and a modest personal service. In the Alhambra he carried out several enterprises in the field of art, architecture, and gardens, according to the Baroque taste prevailing in Europe. He brought together an important artistic collection that was part of the decoration of his Alhambra palace –even at the royal palaces–  that we know thanks to the inventory made after his death in 1646.
