The «new mestiza» in popular culture: the concept of border and construction of identity through America Chavez
Abstract
Borders work as spaces of transit, convivence and creation of identities in the margins of an established system. This study aims to apply Gloria Anzaldúa’s concept of «mestiza» to America Chavez, the first openly queer and latinx superhero of the history of American comic book. The principal aim is to reformulate the concept of «mestizaje» through the analysis of this work, looking for the particularities that traverse this character’s iconography towards a construction of identity based on the idea of border as a conflictive space.Downloads
