The first auctions of Velázquez’s works in France: Spanish collectors and the insertion of the Spanish painting school in 19th C. Europe
Abstract
During the 19th century, important Spanish collectors auctioned paintings, for the first time in France, associated to Diego Velázquez. This paper studies their career focusing on the most significant ones. The place of said painter in their collections, and that of the Spanish school in general are thoroughly analysed. When it comes to it, the paintings presence in the press, as well as the collectors’ contacts with art dealers are also considered. The study sources mainly from the sales catalogues of those collectors.Downloads
