Atmospheric Panorama, Typing Genre Paintings, Symbolic Ekphrasis. The Function of Literary Images In C. F. Meyer’s "Jürg Jenatsch" (1876)
Abstract
Three main types of literary images can be found in C. F. Meyer’s Jürg Jenatsch: the description of landscapes, portraits of characters in literary genre paintings, and the ekphrasis of paintings. These descriptive passages are closely linked to the plot of the novel, since the lyric description of nature reflects certain moods, the genre paintings stretch character traits, and the paintings add to the symbolism of character constellations by pointing to wellknown sujets from history, religion, or arts. This link between the dynamic plot and static descriptions varies the program of Bourgeois Realism by stressing not a imprint of characters by their physical and material surroundings, but the fact that the plot depends on aesthetic conventions.Downloads
