Closeness and Distance as Dramatic Elements in Ransmayr’s "Odysseus. Verbrecher" and Stefanovski’s "Odisej"
Abstract
Dramatic functions of mental and geographical concepts of ‚closeness‘ and ‚distance‘ can successfully be applied to the idea of ‚Heimat‘. The analysis of Christoph Ransmayr’s Odysseus. Verbrecher and Goran Stefanovski’s Odisej shows that homecoming can be disappointing because the mental projection of ‚Heimat‘ does not match the geographical one. Both protagonists stay at a mental distance from home, which harms their environment and their own identity. The German concept of ‚Heimat‘, as Peter Blickle shows it, can be applied to both texts. However, Ransmayr’s text shows that it was built around and in comparison with this concept, while Stefanovski’s text only reveals some mutual elements, but is not congruent with the cultural concept ‚Heimat‘.Downloads
