From Schiller’s Aesthetic Theory to Deconstruction and Demystification. Elfriede Jelinek’s / Nicolas Stemann’s "Ulrike Maria Stuart "
Abstract
As many other works by Elfriede Jelinek, the play Ulrike Maria Stuart has plenty of intertextual references. Besides Schiller’s Maria Stuart, Jelinek’s text also quotes and paraphrases – amongst others – the writings of the RAF (Red Army Faction), as well as journalistic publications about the West German far-left militant group. This article explores the role of intertextuality in Ulrike Maria Stuart as an instrument to question and deconstruct an idealistic representation of life and art, as it is presented in the quoted texts. The object of analysis of this paper is also the theatre production directed by Nicolas Stemann, which was released on the 28th October 2006 in Hamburg. The production as well as Jelinek’s text integrates, although from a different point of view, the idealistic approach with a postmodern one in the present contextDownloads
