‘Memories’ of the Third Generation – Imaginations of the Past in Julia Franck’s "Die Mittagsfrau" (2007)
Abstract
Julia Franck’s novel Die Mittagsfrau (2007) is one of several contemporary German novels that deal with the Nazi era and the situation and involvement of a family in this period. As an author of the third generation after WWII, Julia Franck stages individual and collective memory of the “Third Reich” in literature. This article examines the fictional reconstruction of the past as presented in the novel and looks into how young authors contribute to a self-image of German identity with their historical-fictional works.Downloads
