Desired and hierarchical bodies: an intersectional perspective

Keywords: sexual desire, intersectionality, corporeality, sexuality, feminism, power, gender

Abstract

Introduction. This article is part of a doctoral thesis that seeks to explore, from a gender and intersectional perspective, the elements involved in the subjective construction of sexual desire. In this context, it will further analyse the subjective perception of bodies as an influential variable in the experience of desire. Objectives. To explore the meaning of corporeality in different sexual practices and behaviors, to approach power dynamics according to the normativity (or not) of the bodies involved, as well as to approach identity components related to the reading of corporeality that may determine its degree of desirability. Methodology. For this purpose, qualitative research has been carried out, conducting twelve in-depth interviews and a discussion group, with a sample of people of different ages, sexual orientations, race and socio-economic levels. Results. The discourses of the people interviewed about their sexuality and corporeality were analyzed, making visible stereotyped constructs and heterocentric mandates detected both in eroticization and in the experience of sexuality. Conclusions and discussion. This article aims to contribute with a more comprehensive view of the influence of the body in the individuals´ experience of desire and recognition of themselves as desiring and desired subjects/objects, since there still is little research which addresses this issue from an intersectional perspective.
