Afro-Argentine women in the 21st century: From marginalization to academic interest

Abstract

Introduction. Despite the historical invisibility of Afro-Argentine people and the academic production that analyzes their cultural, organizational and identity dynamics, in recent years there has been the growth and reestablishment of an interdisciplinary field of Afro studies. Within this movement, there is a growing interest of academics in analyzing Afro-descendence in Argentina, focusing on the women who are part of the group and whose actions are central to account for the organizational dynamics and political actions. Objectives. Stated thus, this work proposes to review and discuss the bibliographical production that inquire about Afro-Argentine women to establish possible lines of analysis, advances, and vacancy areas that require greater theoretical and empirical reflection. Methodology. For this, we will take the studies that reflect on the action of Afro-Argentine women in the processes of construction of racialities and racisms, inequalities, activism and militancy, organizational and associative movements and their relationship with gender dynamics in the last two decades in Argentina. Results and conclusions. From there, we will give a preliminary account of a growing Afro-Argentine epistemic visibility produced in recent years from the intersection of political movements and demands for rights, and an academic interest located in gender dynamics.
