Sexist Narratives and Hostility in the Digital Newspaper Forums: An Analysis of Local Newspapers

Abstract

With a gender perspective, this paper offers an analysis of the readers’ participation in digital newspaper forums, as seen in relation to news about women and/or feminism. The aim of our research is to find out whether hate speech is present and, if so, which formulas are used to legitimize it. The corpus is based on four newspapers published in the Basque Country. The increase in the participative capacity of the audiences has transformed the out-of-school learning experiences. In this context, this paper approached to the activism that uses communicative technologies that make possible the hegemony dispute through which young activists project their codes and values around disputes and conflicts. Among the conclusions drawn we can highlight the fact that traditional male chauvinism seems to have continuity today, but under new forms. The findings reveal the emergence of now takes the shape of a ‘neosexism’ that argues equality from allegedly egalitarian standpoints. At the same time, it questions women themselves through strategies such as lack of acknowledgment or ambivalent sexism. The study shows that the online participation spaces reproduces the traditional gender power structures: digital media emerge but do not challenge the patriarchal nature of the media.
