Abstract

Fifty Shades of Grey (2011) by the English author E.L. James is currently having great success among Spanish readers. In these lines I demonstrate the author’s lack of creativity by enumerating the popular patterns in the novel. To give foundation to these patterns, I compare Fifty Shades of Grey with a previous Spanish popular novel, Cristina Guzmán, profesora de idiomas (1936). Also, I explain the readers’ response within the Spanish historic and social context
