Abstract

The present article focuses on the combatants of the insurgent army during the Spanish Civil War who did not accept either with their forced mobilization or voluntary participation in the war. In order to do so, the research pays attention to a series of acts of resistance and dissidence, which show how these individuals tried to stay out of the conflict, in some cases at a high personal cost. Through the study of these cases, and without attempting to establish its overall impact over the conflict, we intend to show how the make-up of the insurgent troops was more diverse than the propaganda and the public discourse have led us to believe. In so doing, this article contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the past, particularly of a group of people usually ignored in the historiography.
