Abstract

This article aims to study how the liberal myth on Rafael del Riego survived after his death in 1823 in Spain and other European countries, since that personality had a big international repercussion. His uprising in 1820 defending the 1812 Constitution became an emblem of liberty in all posterior periods beyond the Liberal Triennium in Spain. His humiliating ending during his detention and trial and after his execution on the gallows in Madrid’s plaza de la Cebada started a legend which survived, with twists and turns, for decades inside liberal collective imagination. Related to the Napoleonic model he represented, the works that built a cult around him and the acts which expressed that cult were numerous and varied, and they came from different geographical contexts.
