Critique in video game journalism from a gender perspective: differences in professional practice between women and men in Spain (1997-2022)
Abstract
This paper describes the differences between women and men in the exercise of cultural criticism within video game journalism. We analyzed reviews published in six Spanish magazines —Meristation, Vandal, Hobby Consolas, IGN, Nintenderos and AreaJugones— from the origins of the specialized digital press, in 1997, to 2022 (n=23,230). The results show how, despite the gender prejudices associated with women —and the historical discrimination entailed— the differences between groups are practically null: the average score coincides regardless of media outlets, dates, age classification or predominant genres. The main difference is found in video games with sexual content, where women are more critical.
