Mimosas and purple ties: symbolism of March 8th in Italy and Spain
Abstract
March 8 is a symbolic date for the feminist movement. Over the decades, a symbolic and iconographic repertoire has been generated that has shaped the collective identity of both feminism and this anniversary. The symbolic resources used mix the heritage of each country with new expressive forms from digital technologies. The objective of this article is to carry out a chronological and comparative study of the practices of construction of symbology around March 8 in Italy and Spain. With the analysis of the different expressive resources used in both countries, it is possible to understand the collective imagination associated with March 8 and to highlight the allegorical richness and diversity of its symbolic inventory.
