Sálvame: A Paradigmatic Format of Genre Hybridization in the History of Spanish Television
Abstract
On June 23, 2023, the last episode of one of the most successful formats on Spanish television since its premiere in 2009 was broadcast: Sálvame, the hallmark of Telecinco (Mediaset Group). This study aims to determine the genre to which the format was ascribed and what were the elements that contributed to its success and permanence on screen for fourteen years with a screen share higher than the average of the channel, being this the most watched in Spain for ten consecutive years (2012-2022). After conducting twenty in-depth interviews, the results point to Sálvame as a paradigmatic case of television hybridization. This mix of genres focused on entertainment is the main asset of the program.
