The Spatiality of Global Capitalism: Recent Trends and Paths for its Transformation. An Approach from the Colombian Experience in the 21st Century

Keywords: space, geographies of power, spatial justice, common goods, good living

Abstract

The spatial transformations that accompany the globalization process have motivated increasingly systematic social scientific analyses on the impact of geographical issues on social dynamics. The configuration of a global geography has revealed the importance of territory for the understanding of the new historical phase of capitalism and has warned about de-spatialization and hyper-historicization in social analysis. The article aims to characterize the recent trends that have accompanied the configuration of a new capitalist spatiality, placing special emphasis on the process that has taken place in Colombia over the last three decades. The methodology was supported by a documentary review work, especially of public policies and reports from international agencies, on territorial planning and spatial inequalities. Also, by monitoring social organizations that register territorial conflicts in Colombia. The article’s conclusions revolve around the deepening of spatial inequalities under the new global order and the possibilities that emerge to advance a horizon of spatial justice thanks to the geographical imagination of the communities and their struggles for the care of common goods.
