War and Organization of Space: The Territorialization of the French State

Keywords: war, territory, modern state, geopolitics, space

Abstract

In this article we address the relationship between war and the organization of space in the
formation of modern State. For this we focus on the main theories about war and the formation of the
State. In contrast to most of these theories, we use geopolitics to present our explanation. We argue that
geopolitics is a practice inserted in war and that the latter has decisive implications in the organization
of space. Thus the war has led to the transformation of the internal state constitution with its
territorialization due to security reasons. This has meant both the integration of the geographical space
of the state in a common jurisdictional framework and the establishment of external political borders.
We contrast this hypothesis with the study of the French state and analyze how internal and external
wars contributed to its territorialization.
