Abstract

This article deals with the evolution of the economic base of states, from medieval autarchies to territorial and monetized states. It shows how, after the increase in the pace of globalization in the 1970s, territorial-based economies began to decline and increasingly extensive and dense circuits of global cities began to appear. In this way, at present, the world political map has a dual structure: on the one hand, there is a mosaic of formally independent territorial states, and, on the other, a network of cities, the global archipelago, which reflects the type of operation economic.
