Frontier and tourism in the “more Portuguese municipality of Portugal”
Abstract
Tourism has been heralded as a repository of hope for sustaining the future of borderlands through the discourses of different power structures. The municipality of Idanha-a-Nova has been pointed out as the most dynamic in this sector within the Beira Interior Sul region, being promoted has a place where the “essence of the nation” is offered to contemplation, as stated in the touristic slogan: “Idanha-a-Nova, probably the most Portuguese municipality of Portugal”. This article intends to provide some clues to think on the place occupied by the frontier on the construction of touristic images and narratives about this municipality as a “redoubt of Portugueseness”.Downloads
