The freedom to Choose One's 'Self': 20.000 especies de abejas (Estibaliz Urresola, 2023)
Abstract
Through the critical analysis of the representation of transsexuality in film by means of the film 20,000 species of bees (Estibaliz Urresola, 2023), the aim was to highlight the search for one's own voice and the fact that addressing diversity is an overcoming of the traditional hegemonic language that has defined, and continues to define, cinema. As spectators, through film we can understand and approach a reality that has been under-represented both in society and in film creation. In this way, dissident realities are made visible, highlighting the need for research and studies related to the issue raised here. The methodology employed is based on a case study of the transsexual film, seeking to highlight the under-representations of those who have traditionally been on the margins of narrative and society. In this way, the historical silence that has conditioned these dissident sexualities is overcome in Urresola's film by serving as a positive reflection of these «trans»* childhoods.
