Video Games, Sexual Orientation and Youth: An Approach Based on the 2023 Youth Survey
Abstract
As an audiovisual medium, the importance of video games has increased over recent decades, both in terms of their economic impact and the number of players. This article focuses primarily on the use of video games by young people, as this medium fosters socialization beyond mere entertainment.
Through the Youth Survey, which in its latest edition marked its 40th anniversary, an initial approach is made to the profile of young video game players. The purpose is to analyze how sexual orientation influences video game use. At a second level of analysis, the situation of young women and men is examined in relation to sexual orientation in order to determine whether differences exist in video game use. Ultimately, drawing on the 2023 Youth Survey, the aim is to understand the situation of young people and video games from an inclusive perspective and through the diversity of players’ sexual orientations.
