Catching an Impossible: Audiovisual Essay and Art Documentary in Spain
Abstract
This text presents an approach to art in four films made by Spanish filmmakers through the forms of documentary and audiovisual essay: El sol del membrillo (1992) by Víctor Erice, La casa Emak Bakia (2012) by Oskar Alegria, El jardin imaginario (2012) by Guillermo G. Peydró, and Oscuro y lucientes (2019) by Samuel Alarcón. These films are focused on the digression and the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction rather than the art pieces and artists featured in their works and seem destined to catch an impossible: defining what art is and what gives rise to both the artist and his work.
