Jeanne de Valois, reine de Navarre et comtesse d’Évreux (1343-1373)
Abstract
Joan of Valois (1343-1373), daughter of John II, king of France, married Charles II, king of Navarre (1332- 1387), in 1352. She was given diplomatic missions to her brother, Charles V, and her tragic and premature death deprived her husband of one of the best elements of concord between him and the French kingdom. Charles II endowed his wife with a household with its own resources and dames and servants from France. He gave her powers to govern his kingdom while his was in France in 1369-1372. She delivered a kingdom in peace and spared from the ravages of soldiers. She wisely preferred to avoid war with Castile, which she sensed would be disastrous for Navarre.Downloads
