Manuscript sources for the study of medieval epigraphy: The Crónica de Armería Selva y Vergel de Nobles

Keywords: Medieval epigraphy, Epigraphic transmission, Epigraphic edition, Manuscript sources

Abstract

The unpublished manuscript entitled Crónica de Armería Selva y Vergel de Nobles, held in the Archivo Histórico de la Nobleza, is a source of unquestionable value for heraldry, nobility and, especially, for medieval epigraphy. It contains a total of twelve literary copies of unpublished inscriptions, now disappeared, which allow us to approach epigraphic documents that we could not otherwise know. Following the working methodology of the Corpus Inscriptionum Hispaniae Mediaevalium, the aim of this work is to analyze the value and veracity of the information contained in them, paying special attention to the four copies that come from provinces that have already developed epigraphic studies of the medieval group. In doing so, we aim to update and expand our knowledge of the epigraphic heritage of these territories by publishing new epigraphic texts, and by updating and expanding the information on others already known in these territories.
