The Plunder of Torrijos
New Information about the Rebellion of Toledo in 1449
Abstract
The rebellion against the monarchy that took place in Toledo between 1449 and 1451 was one of the most famous of the fifteenth century in Castilian lands. What began as a riot at the request of a tribute by the king's private ended up becoming a revolt of unknown dimensions, in which the rebels raised their voices not only against the private but also against the monarch himself and even against the Vatican. Meanwhile, on the streets there were aggressions against the Jewish converts, accused of all evils. In spite of its impact in Castile, keys of this revolt are still unknown or misinterpreted. This article deals with some of those errors, and more specifically about the way in which the pacification of the city took place, in the light of the plunder of Torrijos in 1450.
