Abstract

The apparition of the Spanish concessive conjunction aunque provides a typical example of grammaticalization by means of pragmatic implications that end up being a part of the literal meaning of the new conjunction. The adverb aun underwent an evolution and became a focal particle that combined with collocations/constructions of hypothetical conditional meaning. This combination resulted in a concessive meaning that was initially only possible with the subjunctive.
