Abstract

In this article we review the little that is known about the biography of Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo, author redactor of the four books of Amadís de Gaula (1508) and the fifth book of the same series, The Labors of the Brave Knight Esplandián (1510), we consider documents found in the Inquisition Archives in Madrid, and then we analyze passages relating to two of the most notable characters found in the five books, the converso Frandalo and the second «amie» of the protagonist himself. In this way we begin this study in order to determine whether there are enough textual and biographical clues to conclude that Montalvo was a converso.
