Abstract

The article summarizaes and analyzes the content of two Francisco Umbral's works, Las pafab;-as de fa tribu (1994) and Diccionario de Literatura (1995). In these two works Un¡bral develops a personal history of the Spanish Literature of the 2Oth Century. We study the very peculiar essays of the author; they never hide bis heterodoxy aud subjeetivism. lis a form of understanding the History of Literature parallel to the canonie or academic one. We pay special attention to the way Umbral characterizes the writers he studies, and to the importance of the aneedotes that make them play their assigned roles. Review, commentary of the literary life, polemic and love proposal to a way of living: the way the writes lives.
