The female spiritual authority in the late medieval Castile period and its reflection in Alonso de 'Villegas´s Flos sanctorum'
Abstract
This article discusses how, in order to delve into the study of the configuration of the female spiritual authority that emerges in late medieval Castile to diminish some decades later, it can be revealing to analyze the discourse woven into certain hagiographies of devout and charismatic women born before Teresa de Jesus. In this sense, an analysis of the Addition to the Third Part (printed for the first time in 1588) of Alonso de Villegas´s Flos Sanctorum is interesting in that it offers a biographical anthology of Castilian women who achieved a reputation for holiness in the late Middle Ages or early 16th century.
