Historical and semiotic analysis of 'La fuerza del mal' (1914): Manuel Linares Rivas as 'novador' dramatist
Abstract
In this work I propose a historical and semiotic study of La fuerza del mal, written by Linares Rivas and performed for the first time in 1914. The basic hypothesis suggests that this Galician author belongs to a trend of dramatists that show a deep social commitment. This is confirmed by analyzing how the characters disobey the demands of the Bourbon Restoration society. It is concluded that, although the author is not a mainstream Marxist dramatist, this play evidences a social-political concern based on the fundamental values of contemporaneity: freedom, equality and fraternity.
