Abstract
The text examines a passage of Cervantes’ Licenciado Vidriera in order to underline a misread Italianism that, since the Italian translation of 1912, have been spreading in the last century both in Italian and other foreign languages translations, the Spanish ones included. The misinterpretation even caused the alteration –as in the case of Francisco Rodríguez Marín– of the original version published under Cervantes supervision of the Novelas ejemplares.
Due to the recent attention paid by cultural historians and lexicographers to the art of cooking in the Italian Renaissance, it’s possible to consider as correct the spelling of the Italian word used in the first editions of Cervantes’ work, a misinterpretation the current reading of the term macarela (meatballs) and as to say that it is not a meat but a fish: mackerel.
