Abstract

The Libro de entretenimiento de la pícara Justina (1605) has been acknowledged as a literary work which shows a convoluted language and, more often than not, an obscure vocabulary. However, this has not prevented numerous lexicographers from feeling attracted towards this work, and they have ventured to compile and define the words it contains. The Diccionario de autoridades is a case in point, insofar as its articles collect up to 856 quotations from this picaresque work.

The present article, nonetheless, focuses on the other major Spanish monolingual lexicographical work of the 18th century, the Diccionario castellano, by Terreros. The presence of La pícara Justina is first quantified and compared to that found in the Diccionario de autoridades. Then, attention is drawn to the study of certain groups of words, and especially to particular words which are analysed in the light of their lexicographical treatment.
